American Literature Syllabus
INSTRUCTIONAL GOALS:
 
This course will work with an anthology and novels which exposes students to American writers. It will cover works of literature by American Authors that reflect the heritage, history and cultures of our country.  There will also be an emphasis on grammar and vocabulary in preparation for the SAT exam. Different writing styles will also be introduced. 

At the end of this course, you will

  • Know the elements of literary genres.
  • Be able to identify the topics and themes contained in certain forms of literature.
  • Understand how literary elements contribute to a written work.
  • Be able to write essay/research papers that will evaluate/critique a work of literature.

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

Grade will be determined by a combination of assignments including: tests, quizzes, homework, class work, class participation (includes readings), projects, presentations, and research papers. Late papers or projects will be accepted one day after the assigned due date; however, there will be a ten point deduction from the final grade. If homework is not completed by the assigned due date, the grade is a zero. 

*Any assignment which is typed must be done in Times New Roman, 12 pt font, and 1” margins. Points will be deducted from the assignment if it is not completed in this format.
