A.P. Biology Syllabus

INSTRUCTIONAL GOALS

This course is a rigorous introduction to college level biology and prepares students for the Advanced Placement examination. It follows the AP syllabus prepared by the College Board. The two main goals of this course are to help students develop a conceptual framework for modern biology, and to help students gain an appreciation of science as a process. Essential to this conceptual understanding are the following: personal experience in scientific inquiry; recognition of unifying themes that integrate the major topics of biology; and application of biological knowledge and critical thinking to environmental and social concerns. The topics covered are Molecules and Cells, Energy Transformation, Heredity, Evolution, Physiology, and Ecology. Significant laboratory work reinforces and extends the intellectual framework of the course.
