Spanish III Syllabus

INSTRUCTIONAL GOALS

One obvious reason to study Spanish is to learn to talk with others in their own language. Perhaps a friend or someone in your family is bilingual. Over forty million people in the United States use Spanish every day of their lives, so there is a good chance that if you don't already have Spanish-speaking acquaintances you soon will.

Another benefit of your effort this year will be an increased awareness of the countries in the world that have large Spanish-speaking populations. For example, did you know that the United States shares a 2,000 - mile border with Mexico? - Millions of people travel back and forth between the two countries every year for both business and pleasure. The economic, social and historical ties between Mexico and the United States have existed for years and are becoming stronger every day.

Of course, you know that Spanish is spoken in Spain. However, how much do you know about the countries of Central America, the Caribbean, South America and Africa, where Spanish is the official language? - This year you will learn about these places and the people who live there.

At the end of this course, you will…

  • Learn about places you may visit.
  • Understand some of the cultural similarities and differences that exist among the people in various parts of the Spanish-speaking world.
  • Begin to communicate in Spanish from the first day of class.
  • Experience a wonderful feeling as you learn to communicate with others in another language.
  • Gradually notice that you are able to say and understand more and more.
