A.P. Spanish Syllabus
 

INSTRUCTIONAL GOALS

This is a two-semester course intended to be the equivalent of a third-year college level "Introduction to Spanish Literature" course. The objective of the Advanced Placement course is to prepare students for taking the Advanced Placement Test in Spanish Literature. Students will learn to develop a high degree of competence in language skills and in the interpretation of literature.

At the end of this course, you will …

  • Have considerably increased your reading comprehension and writing proficiency in Spanish enabling you to pursue upper level division work in Spanish.
  • Be able to understand, discuss, and analyze major complex pieces of Spanish Literature in their original versions.
  • Be able to write analytical and critical essays demonstrating clear comprehension of the works.
  • Be able to formulate and develop a logical written argument drawing from your own critical acumen.
  • Be able to demonstrate a critical awareness of the degree to which cultural identity is a social construction.

NEEDS AND RESOURCES

Required Background

To successfully complete this course, students are required to read, analyze and discuss in writing a wide variety of representative works from three major genres:

(1) Narrative, (2) Poetry, and (3) Theater.

  • Students must have completed three years of the language and must have developed the ability to read, write, converse in Spanish.
  • Students must be interested in the Hispanic Culture.
  • Students must be willing to read and discuss several works of literature written by prominent Spanish and Hispanic American Authors.

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

General Rules:

Once the bell rings, students are to be in their seats in silence. Attendance will be taken. Late students are to have a pass from the attendance office. The class always begins with a prayer in Spanish. After prayer, students are to be ready for work. Homework will be collected and sometimes graded. Disruptive Behavior, Disrespect,Dress Code Violation, Failing to Report Back to Class after dismissal, Using Electronic Device, Cheating, and Fighting will cause disciplinary detention.

Grading Policies:

  • Class Participation and quizzes in combination with a portfolio of writing activities (65%)
  • Midterm (15%)
  • Final (20%)

*The final Exam will be a Report on the author and the work that the student enjoyed the most. It will be red in front of the class.

 

**The AP EXAM SPANISH LITERATURE will be on Friday May 16 at 8:30 A.M. (Cost $84.00)
