SYLLABUS
Religion I
5 days in a 6 day cycle
INSTRUCTIONAL GOALS
In the beginning of the year, students will be given a basic overview of the Catholic Faith. During the remainder of the year, students will look at the important moments of salvation history as recounted in the Old Testament, with an emphasis on the many foreshadowings of Jesus Christ.
NEEDS AND RESOURCES
Required Materials
To successfully complete this course, you will need
- The Catholic Faith Handbook for Youth -Brian Singer-Townes
- Written on Our Hearts - The Old Testament Story of God's Love - Mary Reed Newland
- New American Bible (School and Church Edition)
- Loose-leaf paper
- Scotch tape OR a stapler
- Hi-light pen I pen (only blue or black) I pencil (#2 lead)
- Marble notebook
Bible:
The Bible is not "just a book"-- it is the Word of God. As such it must be handled with respect. It is expected that you will keep your Bible clean and graffiti-free. Put your name and Homeroom on the front inside cover of your Bible. (Your Bible will be used during each of your four years here at Stepinac. If you care for it this year, you will not have to go through the expense of buying one again next year.) We will not use the Bible every day in class. I will announce, on the previous day when Bibles are to be brought to class --- I do not want you carrying them around all day if unnecessary.
Notebooks:
A. Your notebook will be used for Homework and class notes. Instructions given for the
format of your notebook must be carefully followed.
B. Handouts (charts. maps. notes, study guides. etc.) ARE TO BE STAPLED OR TAPED
INTO YOUR NOTEBOOK IN THE PROPER SEQUENCE. THEY ARE NOT TO BE
FOLDED AND PLACED IN THE BACK OR FRONT OF THE NOTEBOOK OR KEPT IN A
SEPARATE FOLDER.
C. Do not tear pages from your notebook or decorate the pages or covers with graffiti.
D. On the Outside Cover of your notebook - PRINT CLEARLY your name and your
Religious Studies Period and Room 212 in the section provided for that information.
Homework:
A. Homework assignments are to be completed and ready to
be checked / handed in on the due date. Assignments handed in on the due date, but outside the class period are considered late. There will be point penalties given for each day an assignment is late / or not done. Credit, once lost, cannot be regained.
B. Students who are absent must keep up with their assignments which can be found on the Web and also on the Clipboard in front of the Classroom. You must check the Clipboard to see if there were board notes given the previous day which must be copied. (These board notes are not on the Web.)
C. Homework late due to absence will be presented after the last class on the day you return.
D. Assignments are to be written neatly and in properly constructed sentences ( if sentence answers are called for.) They are to be done in PROPER SEQUENCE in
your book.
Long Term Assignment:
- Must be typed and of the required length. (The length will be announced.)
- If you are absent on the day the Long Term Assignment is due, you must hand it in after
the last class on the day you return to school.
- Late Religious Studies assignments will not be accepted during Homeroom Period.
- There will be a significant penalty for each school day a Long Term Assignment is late.
Tests:
A. Test dates will be announced at least 3 days in advance. Quizzes may / may not be announced.
B. After a previous day’s absence (since you are notified of test dates in advance) you will be expected to take your test on the appointed day.
C. If you have missed a test because of absence on the day of the test, it is your responsibility to check the Clipboard or to approach me at the beginning of class for information regarding make-ups. Make-up tests are taken after the last
Class on your first day back.
D. Failure to appear for a make-up test or quiz will result in a grade of zero for that particular
test or quiz. (Involvement in extra-curricular activities does not excuse one from his re-
sponsibility to take a make-up on the day assigned.)
E. Tests and quizzes will be done: PEN (blue / black ) for quizzes
PENCIL (#2 lead) for tests
F. Paper torn from a notebook is not acceptable for tests / quizzes.
Grading:
The scale for Marking Period grades will be as follows:
--Tests / Long Term Assignments: 55% of the grade
-- Quizzes: 25% of the grade
-- Homework / Notebooks / Preparedness / Participation: 20% of the grade.
-- There will be no re-takes given for tests if a poor grade is received.
-- No “ Extra work” will be given to “pull marks up” as we approach the end of a Marking
Period. Assigned work done well DAILY is sufficient for successful results.
COURSE MATERIALS
POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
General Rules:
1. Once the bell rings, you are to be in the room - not outside the door or in the doorway
2. Go directly to your seat and prepare for class
3. BOOKBAGS are to be kept on the floor-- not on your desk. (Rows 1,2,3,4 keep Bookbags on
the LEFT side of their desks. Row 5 keeps their Bookbags on the RIGHT side of their desks.
4. NEVER: a. Touch the blinds
b. Walk in the aisle between the wall and Row 5 (the row nearest the doors)
c. Write on the walls or desks
d. Switch seats (when someone is absent -- do not move to his seat)
e. Talk during a Fire Drill
f. Climb over desks
g. Use the back door (except in case of emergency )
h. Put your books or bookbag, jacket or sweater on the desk of an absent
student.
i. CHEW GUM IN ROOM 212 - NEVER!
j. Spit on the floor in the classroom, on the stairs, in the halls, etc.
k. Leave your seat to throw something out. (You can throw out material on your
way into the classroom or when you leave.)
l. Bring food or drinks to class
5. Straighten your rows at the beginning of the period. There will be a white mark on the floor for
the FIRST DESK. The rest of the desks in a row are to be lined behind that first desk.
6. If you are allergic to bee stings and have to go to the nurse in a hurry, do not waste time raising
your hand for permission to go to the nurse -- just call out your problem, jump up, and run out.
I, or a student, will follow you to accompany you to the nurse.
7. FIRE DRILLS: Follow the directions painted in RED on the wall by the door and the directions
given to you at the beginning of the school year.
8. When HANDOUTS / STUDY GUIDES, ETC. are distributed be careful not to lose them. I WILL
GIVE ONLY ONE COPY. IF YOU LOSE IT, A SECOND COPY WILL NOT BE GIVEN BY ME.
YOU WILL HAVE TO DUPLICATE SOMEONE ELSE'S. You will need this material for study
purposes and for Notebook check.
9. Never look through or remove material from
a. The teacher's desk or closet
b. The file boxes on the window sill / bookshelves
c. The desks or bookbags of fellow students
10. If you wish to speak or approach the Teacher's Desk -- raise your hand-- do not call out. Only
one student may approach the Teacher’s Desk at a time.
11. Do not interrupt a presentation with questions about material being discussed -- wait until the
proper time.
Questions during a presentation, which have nothing to do with the topic being discussed, are out of order. If you wish to discuss other topics, or chat, you may return at the end of the last class when I can give you my undivided attention
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
THE STUDY OF RELIGION IS THE MAIN REASON FOR THE EXISTENCE OF ARCHBISHOP STEPINAC HIGH SCHOOL. THROUGH THE STUDY AND PRACTICE OF OUR RELIGION WE GROW IN OUR KNOWLEDGE AND APPRECIATION OF OUR GOD, WHO NEVER CEASES TO LOVE US. IT IS OUR HOPE THAT YOU WILL USE THIS RELIGION CLASS AS AN OPPORTUNITY TO GROW IN YOUR LOVE FOR THIS GOD WHO HAS SUCH LOVE FOR YOU.
If at any time I can be of assistance to you, please see me after class to set up a time that will be convenient for us to meet. I am usually found in Rm. 212. 1 will also inform you of my daily schedule so you will be aware of the times during the day that I might be available other than the last period of the day.
