SYLLABUS for Latin IV H (AP)
INSTRUCTIONAL GOALS
Latin IV continues the student’s formation with an Advanced Placement course on the Aeneid, Vergil's epic on the founding of Rome and one of the central texts of the Western tradition. A grade of 4 or 5 on the AP examination ensures college credit for its foreign language requirement.
NEEDS AND RESOURCES
Required Materials: a three-ring binder to keep old papers, handouts, practice exams etc; it is important to be able to access previous work, in order to review and make further progress. You must have the following textbooks, available from Varsity:
•
Vergil’s Aeneid: Selections, edited by B. W. Boyd (Bolchazy-Carducci 2004)
• A Vergil Workbook, ed. Bradley & Boyd (same, 2006); and
"Vocabulary cards for Vergil's Aeneid" (same, 2005)
We will devote the year to a close reading of the selections required on the AP syllabus, as well as reflections on poetic meaning and technique; "practice-AP" exams include short answers, multiple-choice, and short essays. Also needed for the AP exam are proficiency in sight-reading of 'unseens', and a background-knowledge of grammar and syntax.
POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
General Rules:
Students are expected to arrive to class on time, with
binder, pen, pencil, textbook(s), and paper; failure to do so will be met with an academic detention after school, as will incomplete homework. Any student arriving late will be expected to furnish a pass explaining his tardiness. There is no reason other than illness for being excused from a class. Civilized behavior is assumed at all times; gentlemen wait for each other to speak, and show respect at all times for themselves, for each other, and for the staff.
Grading Policies:
Reading will be assigned daily, and occasional written work; preparation counts significantly towards the student’s average. The final grade consists of the two semester averages.
