Chemistry Syllabus

INSTRUCTIONAL GOALS

Chemistry: Concepts and Applications focuses on developing the core concepts of chemistry. From the first chapter to the final chapter, the text gradually and incrementally expands students’ understanding of the fundamental structure and properties of matter. Students will learn the basics of chemistry; they will use the periodic table as an information tool and explore bonding, kinetic theory, and the nature of matter in solution.

At the end of this course, you will be able t

·         Classify elements as metals, metalloids and non-metals and compare their properties.

·         Apply formulas to name ionic and covalent compounds

·         Practice lab skills and learn core chemistry concepts

·         Balance chemical equations

NEEDS AND RESOURCES

Required Background

To successfully complete this course, you must be able to apply observations and intuitions to situations and problems formulating hypotheses, and drawing conclusions. This interaction of the thinking process with the content of science should be the core of science and the focus of your science study. You must understand also that good note taking skills can help you advance in science classes.

Required Materials

To successfully complete this course, you will need:

  • Binder and papers for notes, handouts, assignments, tests and quizzes(or 5-subject notebook and folder for handouts and tests)

  • Calculator

  • Pens and # 2 pencils

  • Chemistry, Concepts and Applications textbook, Glencoe, McGraw-Hill

  • Chemistry, Concepts and Applications workbook

  • Chemistry ,Concepts and Applications Chemlab and Minilab Worksheets and folder to place the packet in it.

There will be one project/take home test every marking period.

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

General Rules:

  1. My classroom is based on respect.  I respect each of you as students and expect you to treat your fellow classmates and myself the same.

  2. Whining is not an option.

  3. Students are responsible for their own makeup work.  Students have a maximum of one week to make up work regardless of how long you were absent.

  4. During lecture and discussion all students must be given the chance to hear without being distracted by other students.  For this reason talking is not allowed, unless recognized by the teacher.

  5. Students cannot chew gum, drink or eat in my classroom.

  6. For your safety and the safety of others all laboratory rules must be followed.  Horseplay in the lab will not be tolerated and will result in the student receiving a 0 on the lab.

  7. Safety contracts must be signed by both the student and parent or guardian before the student can participate in any labs.  Failure to get this contract back to me will result in zeros on labs until the contract is returned and signed.

  8. Students must come to Class on Time Every Day prepared. All students should bring their textbook, study guide and binder/notebook to class everyday unless otherwise notified.

  9.  Organization is the key. Binder or notebook should be divided in 5 parts.

  10. Make-up tests will be taken the next day you come to school before or after school unless if students were absent for a while.

  11.  If a student breaks a rule, he gets warning first time, then classroom detention after school; third time, school detention and parents called ( at teacher’s discretion). Any severe disruption or behavior results in school detention and / or referral to the dean.

   * Failure to show up for a classroom detention will result in a school detention.

  1.  NO Late assignments /projects will BE ACCEPTED.

  2. Any incomplete work will result in zero.

                 Grading Policies:

Chemistry is an interesting and challenging course which requires hard work to master.  Much of the later material will require a strong foundation in the earliest material. Students are expected to work hard, and to avoid falling behind.  If a student encounters trouble with a particular topic, he should seek out help immediately.  In addition to extra help during consultation, there are many resources available online.

There will be reading and written homework each night.  Each reading assignment will require a written summary, and the format of these will be explained by the teacher.  The goal of the student should be to use these assignments to help master the material. Every homework assignment will be worth 5 points. Assignments will be averaged as one quiz grade.

Quizzes may be announced, at times, but they will typically be unannounced.  This practice is intended to make sure that the students are working at the subject each night.  These quizzes may contain questions from the previous night’s reading or written assignments, in addition to questions based on earlier lectures.  Quizzes will be averaged as one test grade.

Exams will be based on the current chapter or material that we are covering in class.  It will also include questions from the lab experiments. All tests will be announced. There will also be a comprehensive test at the end of each semester.

Each project will be counted as one test grade.   Extra credit will only be allowed if the student has no zeros.

Laboratory activities will be used to introduce and/or reinforce topics that will be covered in the lecture portion of the class.  Each activity will require a written report of some kind or answering questions. Students will be graded on both their performance during the laboratory activity, and on the written assignment.  It is very important to understand that if all lab work is not completed by the end of the quarter an automatic failure is the result.

Test grades will make 90% of your final grade for each marking period. The other 10% will include your neatness, participation, cooperation, as well as the work in your lab manual and notebook.
