  Welcome to Geometry! (2010-2011)

Mr. Ettere

Course Description

This class is the second of three courses adopted by NYS Education Department. This course employs an integrated approach to the study of geometric relationships. Through a consideration of Euclidean, transformational and coordinate approaches, students will investigate situations in order to justify geometric relationships and properties of geometric figures. This course will help students prepare for the NYS Geometry Regents exam, which will be taken in June 2011.

Materials

·         Textbook

·         3-ring Binder with loose-leaf paper

·         Dividers (Class Notes, Homework, Graded Assignments, Tests)

·         Pencils

·         Graph Paper

·         TI-83 Plus or TI-84 graphing calculator

·         Compass

·         Protractor

My Goals for Geometry

·         To provide a supportive, engaging and challenging environment where all students can succeed.

·         To prepare students for the NYS Geometry Regents exam.

·         To prepare students for higher level mathematics by providing a strong foundation in advanced geometric concepts.

·         To encourage students to take ownership of their learning.

Student Expectations

·         Come to class on time.

·         Be ready to learn.

·         Be prepared with pencils, calculator, binder and required daily assignments.

·         Respect others and be honest.

·         Take responsibility.

Grading Policy

Tests                                                  100 points

Homework                                          0-2 points (1 test grade)

Tests

Tests will always be announced. If you are absent for a test plan to take it the first day back to school. Make arrangements with me as soon as you return. There will be no makeup tests.

Homework

Homework is essential in order to be successful in mastering math concepts.  Homework will be assigned daily and the expectation is that you complete all required problems each night. Homework will be checked, often collected and sometimes graded. You must show work on all homework problems to receive creditAnswers alone are NOT acceptable. In the event that you are absent from school, it is still your responsibility to obtain the assignment and complete it for the day of your return back to school.

Class Participation

In order to gain the most from class, it will be important to be on time and prepared for class. Your participation grade involves asking questions, answering questions, having a positive attitude and contributing during group work activities. Your participation grade is approximately 10% of your average. In accordance with school policy, any tardies or illegal absences will result in a lower grade.

Absent Policy

If you are absent from school, it is your responsibility to obtain missed assignments and handouts when you return. Any work due the day of absence should be handed in upon your return to school. If you are absent for a test, you must schedule a time to make it up the day you return.

Extra Help/Resources

Extra help will be offered after school on Tuesdays from 2:45-3:15 in Room 103 or by appointment.
